Commissioning

“Commissioning” is a collective term which basically means, to prove a system and verify that the system performs in a manner consistent with the design intent. A wide range of dedicated instrumentation is used in the exercising of said systems and in the data collection processes. The test results are analyzed by individuals well-practiced in carrying out such activities.

From an electrical standpoint, Commissioning can include the verification of every circuit breaker, ground fault interruption device, power bus duct, cable, power distribution panel, cable termination, uninterruptible power system, battery bank, generator, automatic or manual transfer switch, etc.

From a mechanical standpoint it can include the verification of every computer room air conditioner, variable air volume unit, air handler, chiller, packaged refrigeration unit, cooling tower, back-up water storage and delivery system, and fuel storage and delivery system. The overall control and monitoring of all systems falls into this category, as well.

The process of Commissioning is performed on new facilities as they are being built, or on an existing facility that is being renovated or converted. Commissioning can be performed on 100,000 square foot Data Center relying on 100% up-time, or on a single refrigeration unit.

It is also wise to perform a comprehensive Commissioning on long-standing installations in order to re-gain a thorough knowledge of the systems that are in daily use. Unprecedented financial damages may be avoided as revealed weaknesses can be systematically addressed, instead of ending in catastrophic and untimely failure.

After “Commissioning”, regardless of the size and scope of the project, you will have a positive understanding of the condition of all components in your facility. A full documentation series is presented in bound material, as well as in electronic form for analysis, sharing, and/or archival storage.

Positively knowing the condition and capacity of any system is the wise approach to protecting investment. Removing “guesswork” from the equation, makes for a smarter business plan.
